Great Lakes Grain is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Grain Merchandising Manager/Lead to join our dynamic team! Reporting to the General Manager you will provide leadership to our merchandising and logistics team to provide exceptional service to our farmer-owners and end-use customers. You and the team will support growers, carriers, and work closely with Grain Originators, as well as working with the branches across the GLG Market Area on grain contracts and elevator grain movement to guide the achievement of volume growth and contribute to grain division profitability to create long-term value for the Organization and Farmer Owners.
What You’ll Be Responsible For:
- Delivering outstanding customer experiences at every interaction.
- Supervising, leading, and developing Grain Merchandising and Logistics personnel by setting performance expectations, providing feedback, and actively maintaining performance management standards.
- Providing oversight of trading, merchandising, hedging and logistics activities.
- Collaborating with the Merchandising, Grain Origination, Logistics, and Grain Administration teams to ensure the efficient and professional execution of purchase obligations.
- Managing financial risk processes associated with grain and commodity trading.
- Responsible for maintaining gross margin and identifying opportunities for incremental margin.
- Maintaining consolidated daily position reports and other grain-related records.
- Developing and implementing grain merchandising programs, including sales and hedging contracts, bid management, and margin tracking.
- Assist in the creation and execution of the commercial grain annual procurement plan and provide advice with respect to operations and capital projects.
- Keep up-to-date with grain trends and market conditions to ensure competitiveness.
- Establishing and communicating storage and drying rates and standard grain contracts.
- Determining daily bids, selecting optimal bids, and monitoring competitive bid activity.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of grain origination marketing plans.
- Provide ongoing feedback and insights to improve grain team processes.
- Travel to connect with customers and build strong relationships with Grain Originators
- Supporting recruitment, training, and supervision of branch staff to ensure efficient and sustainable operations.
- Organize and facilitate producer presentations on current markets and provide marketing education.
- Coordinating with elevator managers to ensure adequate inventory quality and quantity to meet merchandising targets.
- Ensure timely and accurate position, mark-to-market, and exposure reporting.
- Utilizing trading and ERP systems to optimize contracting, position management, and customer relationship workflows.
- Completing other duties as assigned.
- Adhering to company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
What We’re Looking For:
- Post-secondary degree in agriculture, business, or a related field required.
- 5–7 years’ experience in grain merchandising, trading, agriculture, grain marketing, sales, or origination.
- Strong understanding of grain markets, ag supply chains, and risk management/hedging strategies.
- Solid financial, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management abilities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and provide effective customer service.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.
