Sustainability at Great Lakes Grain: Building Market Access for Our Farmer Owners
At Great Lakes Grain, being informed has always been our business—from market fluctuations to new sales opportunities to the day-to-day realities of our farmer customers. That knowledge drives our marketing advice and is the foundation of our commitment to sustainable agriculture.
For us, sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It is an opportunity for market access that every farmer in Ontario deserves. By showcasing the high standards already practiced on Ontario farms, and building programs that recognize and reward stewardship, we are opening doors to stronger markets at home and abroad.
Sustainability in Action
Over the past five years, Great Lakes Grain has been developing and refining sustainability programs that reward growers for their efforts. Our goal is to foster partnerships between Ontario farmers and end-user grain customers, creating opportunities for:
- Collaboration between growers and processors
- Premium market access at both global and domestic levels
- Recognition and incentives for sustainability practices already in place
Examples of these initiatives include:
- International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) – enabling Ontario grain to meet international standards for low-carbon, sustainable production for European ethanol.
- Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) projects with food processors – showcasing Ontario growers’ stewardship and connecting them to premium supply chains.
Ontario farmers already practice some of the most sustainable agriculture in the world. Great Lakes Grain’s role is to connect those practices to the marketplace.
