Great Lakes Grain is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Grain Merchandiser to join our dynamic team! Reporting to the General Manager, you will be responsible for executing grain merchandising activities to provide exceptional service to our farmer-owners and end-use customers. You’ll work closely with Grain Originators, Logistics, and Branch teams to manage contracts, monitor market conditions, and contribute to the profitability and growth of the grain division.
What will you be responsible for:
- Delivering outstanding customer service at every interaction.
- Executing grain merchandising, trading, hedging, and logistics activities in alignment with company policies and risk management guidelines.
- Collaborating with the Merchandising, Grain Origination, Logistics, and Grain Administration teams to ensure the efficient execution of purchase and sale obligations.
- Monitoring and managing financial exposure and margin performance within assigned positions.
- Maintaining accurate daily position reports and other grain-related records.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of merchandising programs, including sales and hedging contracts, bid management, and margin tracking.
- Supporting the creation and execution of the commercial grain procurement plan.
- Keeping up to date with market trends, pricing, and competitor activity to ensure competitive bids and customer offerings.
- Helping to establish and communicate daily grain bids and contract terms.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with growers, end users, and internal teams.
- Participating in producer meetings and market update presentations as needed.
- Coordinating with elevator managers to ensure adequate grain inventory, quality, and logistics to meet merchandising goals.
- Ensuring timely and accurate reporting for position, mark-to-market, and exposure.
- Using trading and ERP systems to manage contracts, positions, and customer relationships effectively.
- Completing other duties as assigned.
- Adhering to all company health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
Requirements for this position:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in Agriculture, Business, Economics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years’ experience in grain merchandising, trading, agriculture, grain marketing, or origination.
- Strong understanding of grain markets, ag supply chains, and risk management/hedging principles.
- Excellent financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with ERP/trading systems (an asset).
